Australian athlete Liam Hendriks, who plays Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, will soon begin treatment after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Hendrix announced on Instagram that he had recently been diagnosed.

The three-time All-Star, born in Perth, is scheduled to begin treatment on Tuesday at AEDT.

“Hearing the word ‘cancer’ shocked my wife and me, as millions of families do each year,” Hendricks wrote on Instagram.

But I am determined to take the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have faced other obstacles in life.

Hendricks said he is “confident” he will “fully recover and return to the mound as soon as possible.”

“With the support of my wife, family, teammates and the Chicago White Sox organization, and the treatment and care of the doctors, I am confident that I will be able to get through this.

Hendricks was named to the All-Star team for the third time last season with 37 saves.

After leaving the Oakland Athletics to sign a three-year, $78 million deal with the White Sox, he will lead the American League in 2021 with a career-high 38 saves.

Hendrix has 115 saves and a 3.81 ERA over 12 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Oakland and Chicago.
