Robbie Smith was fired as the Houston Texans’ coach on Sunday night after the team finished just one season with a 3-13-1 record.

It’s the second season in a row that the Texans have fired a coach after just one year. They parted ways with David Curry last January after he went 4-13 in his only season.

In a statement announcing Smith’s dismissal, general manager Nick Caserio said, “I have always evaluated football operations and believe this is the best decision at this time.” It is my responsibility to build an inclusive and competitive program that can be sustained, but with the support of the (team owners) McNair family and the resources available, I am not currently there, football program in the future. The Texans had the worst record in the league for most of the season, but won two of their final three games, and Sunday’s victory over the Colts earned the team the first overall pick in next year’s draft.

A 32-31 win over Indianapolis gave Chicago the number one pick and Houston the number two pick in April’s draft.

Smith was promoted to head coach after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for one season. His season in 2022 was his 12th as head coach, surpassing his record of 92-100-1 in his career, including his nine seasons with the Bears and his two seasons with Tampa Bay. I have.

Texans owner Cal McNair said in a statement that he and Caserio informed Smith of the transfer on Sunday night and thanked him for his “services over the past two seasons.”

“We thank him for his leadership and character and wish him well moving forward,” McNair said. We are committed to building programs that create sustainable success. Our fans and the city deserve a team they can be proud of.I will work with Nick in this process. We are confident that we will be able to work with Caserio through the partnership to find the right leader for our football team.”

His firing would give the Texans their fourth head coach in years. Curry was hired after coach Bill O’Brien was fired after losing the first four games in his seventh season with Houston in 2020.

It’s the second time in just over a year that the Texan has fired a coach. Dom Capers was the team’s first coach, and he directed four his seasons until his dismissal. Gary Kubiak took over and was fired after his eighth season.

It was Houston’s third loss of the season after the team went 4-12 in 2020. That season came after winning the AFC South the previous two seasons.
