Fernley, NV (KOLO) – Lyon County has a basketball team that feels neglected.

Members of the Fernley Women’s Basketball Team went 18-2 the entire season and were undefeated in the 3A Northeast Division, but say a handful of fans in the state are leaving them out.

But after a 48-47 win over Reno High, this Vaqueros team, a power in the larger 5A class, probably has horses to make people believe.

“It meant a lot,” junior guard Jasmine Torres said of the team’s win over Reno. it was fun.”

The win over the Huskies further cemented Fernley’s confidence in the locker room. The team has high goals.

“States, zones, regions. We want to get those teams back before we start,” Torres said.

The last Fernley team to win a provincial championship was the 2020 team, which suffered a crushing 54-42 loss to Truckee. The school, 40 minutes east of her from Reno, has never won a state championship, according to NIAA record books.

Could 2023 be that year? Head Coach Ralph Dunn hopes so.

“They’re a good group of girls,” Dunn said of his team.

Dunn is in charge after serving as an assistant coach.

The girls grew up playing on the same team, so they have chemistry. They can run and shoot guns, but they can also run a half-court set.

If you switch defenses, your opponent will keep guessing.

In two months, hoop fans across the state will know if Fernley is good enough to win the 3A.
