The Philadelphia Phillies upgraded their bullpen significantly last week.
Since finishing in the top two of the World Series Championship, Craig Kimbrel has made 394 career saves.
Then Baseball Operations President Dave Dombrowski traded two-time All-Star Gregory Soto on a five-player deal with the Detroit Tigers.
Despite being one of free agency’s most active franchises, Dombrowski isn’t relaxed at all.
That should say it all to the enthusiastic fan base.
“When you have pitching depth, you can’t have enough of it,” Dombrowski told reporters. “With[manager]Rob Thomson, we talked a lot about the pros and cons before we did the deal. We have back-end types of people and other types of individuals who can do it the next day. That was very important to him.
It’s been hard to let go of Nick Mutton, Matt Beering and Donnie Sands, but the Phillies clearly got value in a hard-throwing left-hander who had 30 saves last season.
“He was thrilled to join us. When people see our ball club now and see the arms we have there, they think they’re happy to contribute on the back end.” “He will pitch meaningful innings in meaningful games.”
With Seranthony Dominguez, Jose Alvarado, Matt Strum, Kimbrel and Soto among others, the Phillies will have one of the deepest bullpens in the 2023 regular season.
