With less than a month left until the youth soccer district tournament, one thing is clear. It’s not clear which team is the best in Polk County.
Lake Gibson has a spot so far, but the Braves are losing to Auburndale. And that’s one thing that sticks out. One team may have lost to the lower team, but the lower team lost to the team that the higher team lost. In other words, A beat B, B beat C, and C beat A.
So, for the time being, it will shake like this. Polk County’s top six men’s soccer teams are:
Gibson Lake (8-4)
FHSAA Ranking: 18th in 6A
Seasons to date: The Braves have graduated several players of the year in recent years, but are still a top team. They had two wins over McKeel, split with Auburndale and also won over Lakeland Christians. Lake his Gibson had won 8 of 10 games before the break, but the plant stumbled after coming back from a loss to City, 3-2, Celebration. Chad Johnston is one of the top goalscorers in the county. Eisler García Barros has scored his four goals, and Christopher Johnson (2 goals, 10 assists) and Andrés Jerez (1 goal, 6 assists) are effective playmakers.
Auburndale (8-5-1)
FHSAA Ranking: 21st in 5A.
Seasons to date: The Bloodhounds got off to a slow start, going 1-3-1 in their first five games, losing to McKeel and Bartow. They have since won his 6–2 victory, defeating Lakeland Christian, defeating Lakeland, and Lake He split with Gibson. Their only other loss is to Oceanside, California. Mark G Meteras is one of the top players in the county, he has 12 goals and he has 5 assists. Ronel Jasmine He has scored 5 goals and 3 assists. Daniel Whiteside scored four goals, while Tyler Seaver, Eros Hagan and Eric Sanchez also scored two and provided three assists each.
Fort Meade (11-1)
FHSAA Ranking: 10th in 3A.
Seasons to date: After going 7-4-1 last season, the Miners were a dominant team with 11 wins in 12 games. Their only loss was a 1–0 loss to Lakeland, but Holiday avenged that loss with a 2–1 win just before the break. Senior Alex Ventura has his 10 goals and two assists, while senior Angel Cruz has his team-high six assists. However, he only has one other senior, and the minors are populated by his sophomore (6) and his junior (6). Junior Emmanuel Beltran leads with 12 goals and 4 assists. Sophomore German Miranda has 3 goals and 5 assists, and Daniel Flores has 2 goals and 4 assists.
Bartow (4-2)
FHSAA Ranking: Number 35 of 6A.
Seasons to date: The Yellow Jackets beat Auburndale and McKeel early in the season, but still rank below Auburndale in the FHSAA Power Rankings based on schedule strength. Bartow only plays a light schedule of 12 games. With back-to-back 8-0 victories against City before the break and Haynes after the break, Bartow has just three games left with his biggest test coming against Lakeland on 12 January. not.
Lakeland Christian (6-4-1)
FHSAA Ranking: 6th place in 3A.
Seasons to date: Vikings are missing players for football and club soccer, but they are dangerous at full power. They lost a close game to Lake Gibson early in the season. They lost to Melbourne on Thursday. It was his first match in almost a month, but he beat Lakeland comfortably 5–0 on Friday. Trip McLaughlin leads the defense and that’s the strength of the team. Midfielder Hale Ottman is top his player and against Lakeland he scored two goals and with six he leads the LCS. Sophomore Adrian Villanueva has shown his attacking potential as he has scored four goals since returning to the team from football. Ottman and McLaughlin are seniors, but the LCS has a young team of nine in his sophomore year and his freshman year.
Lakeland (10-3)
FHSAA Power Rankings: Number 32 of 6A.
Seasons to date: The Dreadnaughts started the season with a seven-game win streak and entered the holiday break with two wins in a three-game winning streak. They split with Fort Meade. Since returning, they defeated Zefri Hills and lost to Lakeland Christian. Conor Melvin leads Lakeland with 11 goals and 9 assists, while the dreadnoughts are Lathan Williamson (8 goals, 6 assists), Jackson Winter (8 goals, 8 assists), Sam Blackwell (7 goals, 5 assists), and Breckin Southern (5 goals, 2 assists).
