With nine games on the NBA schedule for Sunday, January 8, we’re busy closing out the weekend. His three favorite NBA player props on today’s packed slate feature Scotty Barnes and Damian Lillard shooting his slump and why Rudy. Gobert could make life difficult for Alperen Sengan.

Scotty Barnes is struggling in his second season with the Toronto Raptors after being named Rookie of the Year with the No. 4 overall pick. His efficiency has declined since last season, and his defense has become an ongoing problem for the Raptors’ team, which leaks points every night.

Basketball seems like a chore for Barnes right now. For players growing in joy, that’s a problem. He’s also faced criticism for his offseason approach from sources within the organization, and an avalanche of skepticism from fans inside and outside of Toronto.

Some of this is fair criticism and some is not. Expectations about what Barnes would be like as a player were probably blown out of proportion when he walked out of the gate with a very good record in his first year. But this book is far from being written by Burns.

Assuming he’s improved on what originally promised him—defending, ball-handling, and playmaking—the most important swing skill remains his perimeter shooting. He looked like a confident shooter, much different than before, but he’s lost much of that confidence now.

His shooting percentage has been 28.9% in three games this season, and just 18.2% in his last five games. In his last nine games he has made only two of his three shots. The slump is clearly in his head, as he didn’t make a single attempt in the recent game against the New York Knicks despite playing 36 minutes.

I definitely don’t see Burns developing his shot, but at +100 this is just smart money.

We look again at the 3:30 PM ET game between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Toronto Raptors for Sunday’s slate’s second pick. This time it’s Damian Lillard.

Dame is still playing at the All-NBA level this season, but lately he’s been in a deep shooting slump. She has shot just 22.9 percent from the outside in her last five games, and she has hit three or fewer in six of her last 10 games.

Whether or not that slump continues on Sunday, there’s good reason to think he won’t hit more than three trays against Toronto.

The Raptors’ defense has been a big disappointment this season, but they limit their opponent’s 3-point shots above the break. Allow attempts to non-corner 3.

Like most stars, Dame can’t afford to take many corner threes. He produces most of his looks with the ball in his hands above the break and rarely gets an open catch-and-shoot setup for him in the corners.

The Laps have also shown a willingness to trap, blitz and hard hedge their star opponents like no other team has. Dame is likely to get a lot of attention from the start, making it difficult to get many unbeatable looks.

And when he catches the ball, it’s the drive that offers the least resistance. Toronto has a weak internal defense, so when you show the length of the perimeter, he’ll try to blow away rather than pull up.

Gobert smothers Sengun

Alperen Sengun is one of the NBA’s most interesting young talents. He joined the league last year at the age of 18, having just won his MVP of the Turkish League and spoke little English, but his postgame was polished to a polished sheen.

He’s already a master at using pivots and fakes to create space and angles in his paint, and it’s a joy to watch him work on the low post. They haven’t given him the number of touches he needs that have proven to be highly effective. Also, their guard play leaves a lot to be desired.

Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. are not traditional playmakers and Sengun can spend most of the game without any meaningful touches.

His old-fashioned game has its flaws. I’m sure he will gradually extend his jumper, but for now he relies entirely on paint for all his attacks.

The fact that he can squeeze so much out of such a small section of the court is impressive, but there are some truly good paint defenders like when he scored zero points in a recent game against the Boston Celtics. more susceptible to influence. Best rim defense in the league.

That’s why I’m shorting his points total tonight as he faces off against fellow international big man Rudy Gobert and the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, Gobert has had his best game of the season and his defensive metrics are improving steadily.

When shooting within 6 feet of the hoop, the opponent’s shooting is still -6.3 points worse when Gobert is the main defender. It also explains many players with more tools in their bags to try to trick Rudy.

His future is bright, but he will struggle with the length of the Dread Tower on Sunday.
