“I am completely silent”

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney celebrate after soccer team Wrexham knocked out second-placed team Coventry in a 4-3 upset in the third round of the FA Cup.

“I am completely speechless. What a club. What a town. What a victory. @Wrexham_AFC Forever,” Reynolds wrote on Saturday, including a link to the BBC’s coverage of the match. After defeating Coventry, fifth-tier team Wrexham could advance in the next round against Premier League teams.

Both Reynolds and McElhenney celebrated online. “Wow. Just… wow. @Wrexham_AFC,” McElhenney tweeted. “We are just getting started. @Wrexham_AFC,” McElhenney said in another tweet. Neither of his tweets ever got more than 10,000 likes.

In the midst of their victory, the FX documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which chronicles the purchases and ownership of underdog teams, began trending on Twitter.

“In Welcome to Wrexham, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds learn how to run the third oldest professional football club in the world,” the series description reads. “For 2020, Rob and Ryan teamed up to buy Tier 5 Red Dragon in hopes of turning Wrexham AFC into an underdog tale the whole world could cheer for, but the concern is that neither of them are football players. From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, from the front office to the pub, this documentary series follows Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership, and the two men’s lives. Follows the intertwined destinies of teams and towns relying on the actors of the series to bring profound hope and change to the communities where it can be used.”

The two Hollywood stars purchased a Welsh football club for around $2.5 million in November 2020.

The first season of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ will debut in August 2022. A second season is in the works.
