The Phillies agree righty John Duplantier On minor league contracts, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (twitter link). He receives an invitation to major league spring training.
Duplantier, 28, is looking to return to the majors after spending a year in Triple-A. He spent his entire 2022 campaign with the Oklahoma City Dodgers top his affiliate. His former third-round pick has started in 14 of 34 games, and in total he has played 93 2/3 innings. He posted his 4.80 ERA with the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast in his league. Duplantier reliably hit his 25.5% of opponents, but only induced a ground ball with just over 30% of his balls in play. Perhaps most concerning is that he has walked his 13.3% of the hitters he has faced.
Rice University products were pitched to majors as part of two campaigns. A highly rated prospect during his tenure at the Diamondbacks’ farm his system, he pitched for Arizona in both 2019 and his 21. Duplantier started in 7 of his 19 games and posted a 6.70 ERA in 49 2/3 of his MLB frames. At the time, he achieved his 45.7% ground ball percentage, but above average he had a 19.7% strikeout rate and he had an 11.2% walk rate.
Duplantier adds swing depth to the upper levels of the Philadelphia organization. He can act as accident insurance for the rotation or as relief for multiple innings. However, Duplantier ran out of minor league option periods. If Philadelphia add him to their big league roster at any time, he should either stay in the majors or be made available to other clubs by trade or waiver.
