The PGA Tour is right in the middle of the Hawaiian swing. Thirty-nine players will be in attendance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui this week, and 144 players will play next week at the Sony Open in Oahu. For players invited to both events, the flight time between the two events is just 40 minutes.
For Tom Hoge, however, the journey will be a little different. The TCU alum is making a quick pit stop in Los Angeles, where the world’s 36th-ranked player is heading to watch the beloved Horned Frogs play in the College Football Playoffs National Championship on Monday. Sophie plans to fly to his stadium. He then returned to Hawaii to play at his Waialae country club.

Doug Ferguson of the Associate Press first reported Hoge’s dramatic detour on Twitter.
“We haven’t won since 1938,” Hoge told AP. “I may never have another chance in my life.”
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Champion may not be far from that statement. The Horned Frogs, who upset Michigan in his bowl at the Fiesta, have a Cinderella-like run this season before taking on the reigning National champion Bulldogs. After going 5–7 in 2021, TCU said this campaign saw him go 13–1 with one loss to the Big 12 Championship in overtime. On Wednesday, the SI Sportsbook had Georgia as the 13-point favorite.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Hoge enlisted some of his fellow golf pros on his epic detour. The Tournament of Champions is attended by two of his alumni from Georgia, Brian Harman and Cep Straka. Eight other former Bulldog PGA Tour members of his are also on the circuit this season, and they’ve been very vocal about their alma mater.
