Competing team effort leads men’s basketball, Robert Morris, 78-56

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State men’s basketball team defeated Robert Morris 78-56 at the Beaglee Center on Thursday night.

The Penguins improve to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the Horizon League, while Robert Morris is 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Senior Dwayne Corhill Scored a game-high 23 points Brandon Rush put in 14 points, Marek Green 12 points added.graduate student Garrett Covington and senior Bryce McBride each had 9 points, Adrian Nelson Recorded a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Penguins got off to a cold start from the floor, trailing by six, 20-14, late in the first half. YSU found their rhythm and scored 8 points just before the end of the first half to lead 29-25 in the intermission.

The teams each traded a pair of baskets before the Penguins used an 11-2 run to push a 35-31 edge to a 46-33 advantage with 13:57 remaining.

Green started the run with a step-back three-pointer and a free throw to extend YSU’s lead to 39-31.fast layup John Lovelace Jr.gave the Penguins a 10-point lead, 41-31, and after a basket by RMU’s Stephen Walker, a 3-pointer by Rush and a turnaround jumper by Corhill pushed the Penguins’ lead to 46-33.

Robert Morris cut the lead to 10, but threes from Corhill and McBride and a charity toss from Nelson extended the lead to 18, 54-36 at 11:53.

Youngstown State led 29 men, 73-44, after Rush scored his third 3-pointer of the game with 5:32 remaining.

Youngstown State will wrap up its four-game homestand against IUPUI on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tip-off is set at 2:00 PM at the Beaglee Center.
