St. Mary’s quietly put women’s basketball coach Paul Thomas on leave in late December as part of an ongoing investigation.
When The Chronicle asked about Thomas’ absence, the school confirmed the personnel change by email Thursday morning.
In a statement, St. Mary’s wrote: Associate head coach Alison Fasnacht will serve as acting head coach. ”
St. Mary’s did not publicly acknowledge the move until a brief news release posted on the school’s website on December 27. It said that Thomas was on “paid administrative leave, effective immediately.” The reason for the delay in announcing the suspension is unknown.
Thomas earned his 300th career win on December 17, when Gales defeated the Pacific in overtime. When the St. Marys played his USC on December 21, he was suspended before the next game, missing three straight games and losing all of them.
Fasnacht has been Thomas’s associate head coach for the past four seasons and has been the school’s coach for 12 years.
Gales is 7-7 after a six-game road trip. They host his LMU on Thursday night.
