Alto says they will continue to respect Devonte Mumphrey in everything they do.

ALTO, Texas — During the first game at the new gymnasium on Tuesday night, the Alto High School basketball team honored Devonte Mumphrey and his family on a court named after him.

Mumphrey died in court in February 2022 after suffering a medical emergency.

In honor of Mumphrey, Alto headboy basketball coach Trey Reagan has said he wanted to name the court after Mumphrey and install plates in his honor. It was an emotional night that reminded me of Mate.

“We knocked them all down, signed every player to a basketball, and actually gave him the net where he shot the last shot before he died,” Reagan said.

In honor of Mumphrey’s number 13 jersey, they held a 13-minute silence. They also had his four players in his starting lineup at the start of the game and committed his violation in the backcourt of his 1 of 10 minutes.

Brock Grigsby, Athletic Director of Alto ISD, said losses like this bring the community closer together. His loved ones want Mumphrey to be remembered for what he accomplished on and off the court.

“Not only was he a great athlete, he was a great person, and honestly, that’s what he’ll be remembered for years to come,” Grigsby said.

Alto says they will continue to respect Mumphrey in everything they do.
