January 4 — Mon — Monmouth Academy’s men’s basketball team faced rival Winthrop on Tuesday.
The Mustangs built an early lead en route to a 59-44 win.
Monmouth coach Wade Morrill said, “This method is one of the more complete games of the young season.”
“It was a packed house — Winthrop-Monmouth, always packed. They had to do it tonight.”
The Calder brothers led Monmouth with 16 points for Sammy and 15 for Manny Calder. Gavin Legor added his 13 points.
Manny Calder said the Mustangs were on the gas offensively and defensively for most of the game.
“A big part was the defense. I think we played them solid enough to get them up a little bit and keep them down,” he said.
Winthrop manager Todd MacArthur said increased pressure often leads to errors for the Ramblers.
“They’re physical, they’re hard, they’re fast,” said MacArthur of the Mustangs. “We are a team. When we speed up, we tend to make mistakes and turnovers. Turnovers are usually costly because on the contrary he leads to two quick points. That’s what we try to improve. I am working with.”
“Kudos to Monmouth and Director Morrill for doing a great job.”
Matt Beck scored a game-high 17 points on Winthrop (3-5).
“When Matt Beck can get down the hill to the rim, he can accomplish a lot of great things,” said McArthur. “Once the game settled down, I think he understood the pace of play and felt comfortable and was able to play the game he wanted to play. Early on, the game was too fast, but it picked up speed. Watch him react like he does in the second half.”
Both teams got off to a slow start off the field in the first quarter. Manny Calder scored the first point of the game with his 3-pointer three minutes and 30 seconds into the game. He then made a jump shot for his 5-0 Monmouth lead.
The Ramblers then took buckets from Beck and Tyler Shumway to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Monmouth (4-1) started building their lead at the end of the first quarter. This was highlighted by Manny Calder hitting his 3-pointer at the buzzer to score his 14-6 advantage.
“I felt good after the release,” said Calder. “It’s always cool to hit shots like that.”
The teams traded baskets to start the second quarter, but a 5-point lead from Hunter Frost led the Mustangs to a 23–10 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter was played evenly, but the Mustangs maintained a double-digit lead behind Gregor’s 5 points and Manny Calder’s 4 points in the quarter. Carter his reverse led Winthrop with his five points in the third quarter and Beck scored his six.
Monmouth led 38-23 in fourth place. Winthrop cut the deficit to his 10 points when Rivers and Brayden Stubbert hit his 3, but it was little as the Ramblers got.
“It’s one of the things I’m proud of my sons. They fought to the last corner,” McArthur said. “Never giving up and fighting to the end is a great trait. I was proud of that for my kids.”
The Mustangs hit free throws in the final minutes to seal the win. In the first he went 7-2 in the 3rd quarter, then in the 4th quarter he was 16-13 from the foul line.
“Gavin went 5/6 in the fourth period and Sammy went 5/6 in the fourth period,” Morrill said. “In the 4th quarter it was terrific from the free throw line. Before that it wasn’t that great…we can hold onto the lead in the 4th quarter.”
