PH Boxer qualified for U-22 Asian Games
The Association of Philippine Boxing Alliance (ABAP) is sending eight up-and-coming fighters to compete in the ASBC Asia Under-22 Championship scheduled for January 16-27 in Bangkok, Thailand.
This will be the first international stint in the association’s busy calendar year for both grassroots and elite boxers.
In the men’s division, Mark Lester Durens (48kg), Aaron Jude Bud (51kg), Flint Jarra (54kg), Jericho Akeler (57kg), Marvin Luck Alcobar (60kg), Mark Ashley Fajardo (63.5kg) participated.
Meanwhile, only Althea Shine Poise (48kg) and Mariel Tarandrata (50kg) will be competing on the Distaff side.
“Most of these are first-timers, so the main goal is to give them exposure. These are the future of the team.”
Aside from Thailand’s trend, ABAP is also looking to host a national championship this month or February as part of its enhanced talent discovery programme.
While the focus will be on elite boxers competing for a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics, ABAP continues to strengthen its program at the grassroots level.
Other tournaments for junior and youth fighters include the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships August 1-14 at venues yet to be revealed and Saudi Arabia October 1-7. ASBC Asian School Boys & Girls Boxing Championships.
