A final emotional farewell to the ‘king of football’ Pele.
Brazilian family, friends and fans pay tribute to the football legend as he woke up in the world’s breathtaking stadium with his dazzling skills for the first time. The three-time World Cup winner and widely considered the greatest footballer of all time died last week at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer.
Hundreds of fans lined up Monday morning at Vila Vermiro, home of Pele’s longtime club, Santos, where the remains of “O Ray” (King) were laid. A coffin was displayed in the center of the field.
“Pele, you will never go away. You are in my heart,” said Pele fan Antonio Carlos.
“The mission of an international idol like Pele has been accomplished. He took Brazil abroad. Thanks to him, the country is well known. He’s fine,” said one football fan. Jorge Asena said.
The 16,000-capacity Oceanside Stadium opened its doors for a 24-hour vigil, with a funeral procession on the streets of Santos tomorrow, where he was buried with his family in a private ceremony.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for the stadium to be named after Pele, one of the first to arrive for the service and the only man to have won three World Cups as a player. He said he would ask the country of
“Pele is forever,” Infantino told reporters. “FIFA will rightfully honor the ‘King’. We have asked all football associations around the world to observe a minute’s silence before each match. We have also asked 211 countries to observe a minute’s silence before every match. We will ask that the stadium be named after Pele. Future generations must do so.” Know and remember who Pele was. ”
As part of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s final act during his tenure, he declared three days of mourning in Pele’s honor.
