Cincinnati — Desmond Ridder’s Atlanta Falcons defeated Mijay Sanders’ Arizona Cardinals 20-19 on Sunday. It marked the quarterback’s first NFL victory.

He finished 19-of-26 passes for 169 yards and had no turnovers for 4 carries and 9 yards. Atlanta relied on Ridder’s superior defensive performance and consistent play to beat a weakened Cardinals his team.

“Of course we know we won’t make the playoffs this year, but we’ve talked about wanting to finish the last few games strong.” Ridder said after the game“It started well today, ending it for something good for the future.

Head coach Arthur Smith said Ridder needs to start winning games if he is to become a future Falcons QB, and this is a good first step.

He hasn’t thrown or rushed for a touchdown in three starts, so he should start producing on that end soon. Ridder ranks 46th among all QBs in the NFL this season.

Sanders added two tackles and a nice tackle in the loss.
