The NFL and NFLPA said after a joint review that concussion protocol was never invoked against Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
Tagovailoa has now received his second concussion report of the season and is in concussion protocol. He did not enter protocol until the day after the game when symptoms began to appear.
“The protocol will begin when a player receives a head impact and exhibits or reports signs or symptoms suggestive of a concussion,” the NFL and NFLPA said in a joint statement Saturday. He did not appear or be reported until the next day, at which point it was established that the team’s medical personnel had properly evaluated Mr. Tagovailoa and included him in the concussion protocol.”
Tagovailoa played the entire game against the Packers, throwing three interceptions in the fourth quarter. Many believe he had a concussion late in the first half when his head was seen bouncing off the ground.
The third-year quarterback also took part in Week 4 protocol against the Cincinnati Bengals in a terrifying scene. Tagovailoa lost consciousness on the field and was taken to hospital on his stretcher. He showed symptoms against the Buffalo Bills four days earlier, but was evaluated and cleared to return to that game. The NFL changed its concussion protocol rules because of the ordeal.
The Dolphins are without Tagovailoa for a crucial playoff push. Miami is on his fourth straight loss, and New England in Week 17 against the Patriots and possibly the Jets in Week 18 will rely on veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
The Dolphins control their destiny and secure a playoff spot with a win. If they beat the Patriots this week and the Jets lose to the Seattle Seahawks, they’ll clinch him with a week to spare.
