Tar heels are part of an ugly historical stat

The Tar Heels of North Carolina are poised to wrap up the 2022 calendar year after dropping another game in the pits on Friday afternoon.

UNC fell to pits 76-74 on tour, 9-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, potentially out of Monday’s AP Top 25 poll. But amid losses, UNC also made some history.

But not in a good way.

As pointed out by The Athletic, UNC have lost five and are the first preseason No. 1 team to lose five in a season prior to January 1st. That’s not a proud statistic for a program that had hopes of a national championship earlier this year.

Tar Heels struggles are on the rise and they are all similar. In their loss, they struggled on defense and guard play. Against Pitt, UNC had a good first half but faltered in the second half before a big run from the Panthers took the lead and eventually won the game.

When the calendar turns to January, there’s plenty of basketball left. That’s good news. But if UNC doesn’t fix the issues going forward, it could be another season in a bubble.
