Frank Martin was completely focused on the task at hand. But the very moment he scored his rather one-sided victory over Michel Rivera, the soon-to-be-28-year-old bravely looked into the crowd, met eyes with Rolando “Rory” Romero, and called him out. I called.
The highly ranked lightweight contender has made his feelings clear, but in a perfect world he would love to face Devin Haney on all lightweight marbles. However, Haney is currently distracted by the looming showdown with Vasily Lomachenko, so Martin wants to stay active.
Romero, 27, wants to finally end the most disappointing night of his professional career. After proudly boasting that he could steamroll Garbonta Davis with ease, the chatty competitor was forced to eat his word thanks to Davis’ left hand.
Since the devastating sixth-round stop-loss loss, Romero urged Davis for a quick rematch, but the Baltimore native has openly dismissed it.
With his name and star power at its peak, Martin (17-0, 12 KOs) remains focused on attracting some of the bigger names in the ring. Martin’s promoter, Errol Spence Jr., understands where he’s coming from, but believes a showdown with Romero isn’t the way his fighter should go.
“Don’t call me Laurie anymore,” Spence said following Martin’s victory. “He’s a tune-up.”
Long before the belligerent puncher was defeated by Davis, Spence never appreciated his skill or his antics. Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) admits he still wants to face the unified welterweight champion.
Of course, Romero’s wish is unlikely to come true. Instead, the 32-year-old will continue to sift through a sea of welterweight contenders as his return to the ring approaches.
