The Trinity Christian Lions soccer team is ready to start the 2023 season with a new head coach.

The Mike Townson era kicked off this week, but the team got off to a head start in Friday’s scrimmage game against the Holy Innocences.

The Lions ended a five-win season last year before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Landmark Christians.

“This year’s team will be in year one of a three-year process,” Townson said. is the philosophy of the varsity, junior varsity, and middle school programs.”

Led by the Lions is GACA 2023 Preseason Allstate Player Dylan DePriest.

Coach Townson said, “I have been a head coach for 21 years. He is one of the best, if not the best, captains and I have had the pleasure of coaching him. , his leadership is needed program.”

Regionally, Lions have challenges. Georgia’s class 4A football is one of the best football in the state and our region (4-4A) will be loaded. All games are competing for a place in the playoffs.

Building a proven football program is a process that Coach Townson is familiar with. He continued, “I’ve been focused on building a solid middle school program first, and I’ve done that this year. Middle school has 20 athletes, and they’re in multiple sports and competitions throughout the year. I play club soccer.”

“Then we teach them to play hard for 80 minutes and learn to be mentally tough,” concluded Coach Towson.

Preseason standouts include sophomore attackers Colin Madge, Noah Schlogal and freshman striker Jackson Upshaw.

The Lions’ opener against Pike County on Monday was a casualty of the rain, but they will play for Fellowship Christian on Friday.

The Trinity Christian Lady Lyons also scrimmage on Friday night under the direction of head coach Lance Duncan. They won 12 last season and jumped into talent territory again this season with a 4-4A.

It’s a young roster this year for Lady Lyons. Captain Olivia Osse is the only senior in Duncan’s squad this season.

The Lady Lions will play Spalding County Thursday afternoon at Griffin High School.
