Vermont police said they were investigating the death of a man following a fight at a middle school basketball game Tuesday night.
Provincial Police have raided Albara on Champlain Street in Albara due to a report of a mass fight involving multiple spectators during a seventh and eighth grade men’s basketball game between Albara and St. Albans. The Community Education Center said it was called shortly before 7:00 pm on Tuesday.
The fighting ended before state police arrived and some of the people involved had already left the school.
One of them, 60-year-old Russell Giraud of Alburg, was later seen by doctors and taken by ambulance to the Northwestern Medical Center in St Albans, where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation, according to state police.
Jay Nichols, executive director of the Vermont Association of Principals, said in a statement that the group that oversees school sports in the state had no information about the event beyond what officials provided.
