FALL RIVER — Swansea’s Punishment Striking Systems wrapped up the 2023 Southern New England Golden Gloves Amateur at the Fall River Police Athletic League on Saturday night. The team’s success was due to the high attendance and fun of the boxing tournament.
Champions were crowned in the Open, Novice and Sub-Novice classes. The Open Champion and Novice Champion will advance to his four-week New England Championships starting Thursday 16th February at Lowell Auditorium in Lowell.
Qualifiers for Punishment Striking New England include Christopher Rivera (165 Novice), Jonathan Delgado (147 Novice) and Michael Didino (147 Novice). Punishment Striking Boxer that night he won three of his four bouts.

In a very impressive three-week SNEGG, Milford native Rivera won the decision over Jancel Castro Gante to earn the 165 novice crown. In the first round, left-handed Rivera was particularly effective, landing a left to his face, possibly the best punch of the match.
At 147 Novices, Milford native Delgado and B&F boxer Muhamed Fay were closely matched, with Delgado nodding in a split decision.
Providence’s Hannah Doyle, a Ph.D. student in neuroscience from Brown University, gave Punishment another W. Showing her cleverness and perseverance, Doyle defeated Legendary her boxing Catherine Roberti to win her Novice Title at 119 subs. Doyle sidestepped the Haymaker in favor of quick scoring combinations, and she worked her head and body in all three rounds, earning an eight count in round one.
Her PSS teammate Taylor Fay, from Cumberland, Rhode Island, won the Women’s 139 crown the previous week.
In the fourth of the night’s 14 matches, Punishment Striking’s Joey Brooks made a unanimous decision over Xavier McCachern of Brockton’s Cappiello Brothers Gym with 139 novices.
Didino advanced to Lowell without throwing a punch (or ducking) at Fall River. He was unopposed with 147 open.
In Saturday’s final game, host Fall River PAL’s Josh Seeley was denied Lowell’s spot when he made a decision to Big Six gym’s Ayowall Tom Jones at the 176 Open.
In a very exciting 156-pound developmental match, César Tejada Sánchez (401 Boxing) and Maximilian Cruz (Rab’s Boxing) flew leather for six minutes, much to the delight of a nearly sold-out crowd.
