The February frenzy of high school sports begins with a busy night of postseason action on the district mats.

The WPIAL Team Wrestling Playoffs kick off in earnest with the first round and quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Last year, the second-longest team championship run in WPIAL history ended when Burrell lost to Quaker Valley in the Class 2A final, ending their 15th title streak.

If the Bucs start a new championship, they need to be the third seed in the 2A tournament, behind No. 2 seed Burgettstown and No. 2 Quaker Valley.

The four 2A sites are Burgettstown, Highlands, Burrell and Quaker Valley, with the first round at 6pm and the two winners from each site clashing in the quarterfinals at 7:30pm.

2A First round matches are as follows:

Burgettstown: Southmoreland and Montour vs. Mt. Pleasant in Burgettstown

In Highlands: Indiana at Highlands and Hopewell vs. Fraser

in the barrel: Knock at Barrel and Laurel vs. Central Valley

Quaker Valley: Jefferson-Morgan in Quaker Valley and Freedom vs. McGuffey

3A Playoff Grappling

Waynesburg has a long way to go to match the 15-year title run by Burrell in Class 2A, but the defending 3A champion is seeking a fourth consecutive team wrestling title this week.

The Raiders are the top seed in the 3A playoff field.

This program is the same as a championship wrestling run. Waynesburg achieved his sixth consecutive title between 1959 and his 1964, his 3A record.

If the Raiders win gold again on Saturday, they will match Cannon McMillan (2010-2013) and win the third-longest 3A championship in WPIAL wrestling history. Canonsburg won his five outright titles in a row from his 1936 to his 1940, then splitting the 1941 crown with Waynesburg.

Waynesburg and Canon-McMillan are two of the four sites in Wednesday’s 3A first round and quarterfinals. His other two sites are Connellsville and Butler.

The 3A first round matches are as follows:

In Waynesburg: Fox Chapel at Waynesburg Central and Plum vs. North Allegheny

Connellsville: Franklin Regional at Connellsville and Pine Richland vs. West Allegheny

At Butler: Butler and Trinity vs. Hempfield’s Peters Township

For Canon-McMillan: Canon-McMillan and Penn-Trafford at Norwin vs. Latrobe

the king appears to add

A day after setting the all-time scoring record in WPIAL Boys Basketball, Aquinas Academy Sr. Vinnie Cousini wasted little time trying to add to his record-breaking scoring total.

The Crusaders will visit Hillel Academy on Wednesday for the Section 3-A contest.

With only a week and a half left in the regular season, this is the first matchup of the year between two section foes.

The two will face off again in six days at Aquinas Academy on Tuesday.
