Another top contender list drops this week, with Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer nearing the top again.
The latest ranking comes from Keith Law, a former member of the Blue Jays’ front office who is now the Athletic’s prospect guru after several years in the same role on ESPN.

Law ranked Mayer 11th overall in his Top 100 ranking.
That’s a seven-figure jump for Mayer, who was No. 18 in last year’s low rankings. Law said he was unlucky as Mayer had an uncharacteristically bad day when he saw him live. His enthusiasm had not cooled. Law writes:
“Fortunately, despite his injury troubles, he showed a very advanced approach at bat, finishing strongly in Low A even when he wasn’t at full power, and after being promoted to High A in early August, he was nominated for the 2018 season. It recorded .287/.287. .435/.492 from July 1 through the end of the season. Mayer has a smooth left-handed swing that gives him positive power when he fills out, loft in the finish, and strength in his hands is evident. … He’s an unquestionable shortstop, with great action and quick hands. I know I’m not looking at his best and I take responsibility for my actions. “
Mayer, 20, moved from A-ball Salem to High-A Greenville last season. In his 91 games across the two levels, he recorded his 13 home runs, 53 RBIs, batted .280/.399/.489 and had a . He stole his 16th base and was not caught.
Number 11 is the lowest number he has ever ranked on any of the three major top 100 lists ever published. Baseball he was 10th in America and 9th in the MLB pipeline.
