HOUSTON — Former Houston Rockets guard Russell Westbrook ranks 10th all-time in assists in the NBA. Westbrook achieved a milestone Monday night in Brooklyn in his Lakers second quarter loss to the Nets 121-104 in Los Angeles.
He passed Hall of Famer Gary Payton, who finished his career with 8,966 assists. Westbrook is currently at 8,972.
“From day one, I never took the game for granted,” said Westbrook. “I am so blessed and grateful to be able to go out and compete. I never cheat the game. I do my job.”
“It means a lot, from where I started to where I am today. I have.”
Lakers coach Durbin Hamm said the team recognized Westbrook’s latest achievement after the game.
In his first season off the bench, Westbrook is a contender for Sixth Man of the Year. In 48 games, Westbrook is averaging 15.8 points, 7.5 assists and 6.3 rebounds.
He had 17 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds in the Lakers’ loss at the Barclays Center. Los Angeles is without Anthony Davis (foot injury) and LeBron James (left ankle pain).
