El Paso, Texas (KTSM) – Former UTEP basketball star Kent Lockhart passed away on January 28 at the age of 59.
Lockhart played for UTEP from 1981-1985. These teams were coached by the legendary Don Haskins. Lockhart played in two NCAA Tournaments with his UTEP. Lockhart ranks UTEP 10th in assists and 14th in minutes played. He has 972 points, 349 rebounds and 279 assists.
After his college career, Lockhart was selected 119th overall in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.
It was in Australia and New Zealand’s preeminent professional men’s basketball league, the National Basketball League (NBL), that Lockhart became a professional basketball star.
Lockhart played three seasons with the Eastside Specters from 1989 to 1991, averaging 24.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals. He is an incredible shooter and in the NBL he appeared in 81 games with a field goal percentage he made 51%. Lockhart scored a career-high 47 points against Newcastle’s Falcons in round 18 of 1989. He also played a starring role in Spector’s run into his NBL Grand Final series against Perth in 1991. 1989, 1990 All NBL second team.
