Atlanta – Right-hander Darren O’Day, who posted a 4.15 ERA in 28 games with the Atlanta Braves in 2022, announced Monday that he will retire after 15 seasons with six major league teams.
O’Day, a graduate of Bishop Kenny, twitter account “It’s finally time to hang up.”
“The mental, physical, and time demands finally outweighed my love of the game,” said O’Day.
The 40-year-old O’Day featured an unconventional sidearm delivery. He appeared in his 644 games with his 42 wins and 21 losses and a 2.59 ERA, all in relief. He made his major league debut with the Angels in 2008 and spent his 7 seasons from 2012 to 2018 playing for his Orioles in Baltimore.
He posted a 4.43 ERA in 30 postseason games, including the 2010 World Series with the Texas Rangers.
O’Day has also pitched for the New York Mets and New York Yankees. He returned for his second stint with the team last season after pitching for the Braves in his 2019-20 season. He became a free agent after the season.
He set a career-high six saves for Baltimore in 2015, going 6-2 with a 1.52 ERA and an AL All-Star.
