Seizing Opportunities in a Growing Sports City

With so many games covered each season, the young reporter at Rebel Report, a UNLV student-run sports broadcast and social media outlet, is definitely getting a rep. world of sports journalism.

What inspired you to pursue sports journalism?

One day when I was 13, I was playing an NHL video game with a friend and we formed our own team. I played them against each other and the computers against each other. I watched it as if it were a simulation game, and I thought, “This is interesting. I like it.” That’s when it hit me. I want to do this for the rest of my life.

So I started pursuing. I was in the school newspaper in high school and started writing articles for them. And in 2021, I started videos and editing.Since then I’m just doing my thing [sports coverage] on camera.

When did you first become involved with Rebel Report?

I joined the company in the spring of 2021. I’ve been writing articles all through 2021, but from late 2021, I’m starting to transition to video. I find myself writing articles the same way I write scripts. I already had the idea of ​​writing for broadcast, so I wanted to do more of that.

At first it was tough to be in a video, but what really improved my game to what it is now is when I started working for a news station, talking to people in the broadcast industry, and getting my head around all sorts of things. It was time It was a rough transition, learning how to be on camera. You are your own worst critic, looking at yourself on camera and thinking, “Why did you move like that?” Over time, I got used to seeing myself and hearing myself and accepting that if I didn’t do a good job, I needed to cover another game to do better. What advice did you receive to make yourself more comfortable in front of the camera?

Sports are fun and you should act like you are talking to a friend and tell them what happened at last week’s UNLV basketball game, hockey game or Raiders game. Honestly, the biggest thing that helped me relax was stopping thinking about it. Act like you love your friend, and act like you’re talking to your best friend.

What are the most memorable games or events you’ve covered in Rebel Report?

When the Raiders face the Patriots this season. My family is from New England and I grew up a Patriots fan. And the way the game ended was a Jacobi Myers Lateral picked up by Chandler Jones, who crammed Mack Jones into the ground, returned it for a touchdown, and won the game. It will be my core memory.

And the first NHL game I covered. I grew up a hockey fan and have only experienced CHL hockey here. I never thought I would win an NHL franchise here. I never thought I could stand in his box at an NHL game and rub elbows with the writers I follow on Twitter, or walk past the play-by-play announcers I saw on TV. Growing up was a “wow” moment.

What do you love most about hitting live hits and being part of the atmosphere of the game?

I think that love comes from playing a little sport and feeling like a sporting moment. There’s that kind of thrill that makes you feel like you’ve done it, especially after a hit song.

What are your future goals in sports journalism?

Right now, I’m kind of halfway between playing a play-by-play role and being a sports reporter on local television. I would love to do both. I can see myself working in Boston because it’s so special and there’s always so much going on. i love being in the city I love the sports culture there and have family there. I definitely hope in the next ten years I can work for a network like ESPN or NBC, make really good money, and wear some cool suits.
