Brock Purdy is reportedly out for the next six months.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter On Monday, the 49ers rookie quarterback endured a complete ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear in his right throw elbow and was advised to undergo surgery, citing sources reported Monday. No formal decision has been made as of this afternoon.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero added that Purdy has gotten a second opinion on his elbow and hopes to have it repaired rather than full reconstructive surgery in preparation for 49ers training camp.
Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the 49ers’ first quarter loss of 31-7 to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. The Eagles’ star pass his rusher, Herson Reddick, hit Purdy.
Initially ruled an incomplete pass, officials reversed the fumble call after a challenge from Philadelphia coach Nick Siriani.
Purdy finished the game after that drive, but was pushed back under center after backup Josh Johnson suffered a concussion in the third quarter.
“He couldn’t throw,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after the loss. “He wouldn’t come back unless he had to.”
After the game, Purdy revealed to reporters that he could not throw the football more than 5 or 10 yards.
“My arm felt stretched,” Purdy said. “I felt a lot of impact going from my elbow to my wrist, front and back. It just really hurts.”
Purdy’s injuries continue an unfortunate trend for 49ers quarterbacks this season. Trey Lance, who is expected to take over as the team’s long-term starter, endured a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 and underwent two surgeries. A broken leg in 2008 put Purdy in the spotlight.

Purdy was the 49ers’ starting quarterback, winning all eight games between Garoppolo’s replacement and the end of the season on Sunday.
If Purdy’s six-month recovery schedule is on track, he’s expected to return to the field around June.
