Mock Draft 1.0 is my first draft for the NFL’s 2023 draft, and like every year my main focus is predicting what the Detroit Lions will do.
In that regard, think defense.
The Lions have two first-round picks. His No. 6 spot in a trade that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles for his Rams in 2021, and his No. 18 pick in their own pick, which ended with a 9-8 record.
The Lions are expected to go defensively, and this draft does a good job of filling that need. With an emphasis on defensive backs and linemen, he could be drafted as many as 12 defensive players in the top 18 picks.
This year’s mock draft also includes expected deals in addition to those already made.
Below is my mock draft 1.0. As always, feel free to disagree.
1. Indianapolis Colts (4-12-1). Trade predictions with the Bears (3-14):
A three-year skid of 11-5, 9-8, 4-12-1 made Indy hungry for change. The Colts start over at quarterback.
select: QB Bryce Young from Alabama. Size matters, but production volume does not. He has 79 passing TDs in 27 games over the last two seasons combined.
2. Houston Texans (3-13-1):
With quarterbacks, offensive lines and defensive lines at the top of the long list, they need a lot.
select: QB CJ Stroud, Ohio. He had a good size of 6-3 and 215 yards in 25 games, 8,123 passing yards and 83 TDs, with just 12 interceptions in the past two seasons.
3. Arizona Cardinals (4-13):
With head coach changes and QB Kyler Murray recovering from a season-ending injury, the Cardinals need a pass rusher and cornerback.
select: EDGE Will Anderson Jr., Alabama. He has 34.5 sacks in 41 games.
