St. Louis is also still very young, with prospects like Lars Nootvar, Dylan Carlson and Brendan Donovan surpassing expectations early in their careers.
Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are legitimate MVP candidates who recently joined the Cardinals, and their goal is nothing less than winning the World Series crown. Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina have decided to hang up their cleats and retire from his MLB. Additionally, the Cardinals have added one great player behind the plate to replace Molina. If that’s the Cardinals’ only offseason move, and they want to compete with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets, they still need some weapons to beef up their pitching staff. Even if it looks like it, they need to target this name last minute to round out the roster.
Cardinals’ last-minute trade target: Tyler Glasno
After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Tyler Glasnau only pitched in three games before the end of the 2022 season. The Tampa Bay Rays are known for maintaining low salaries because they play in a small market. Focusing on pitching and defense for success has become their trademark, much like the Cleveland Guardians.
Before his injury, Glasnau was one of the best pitchers in the majors, and his strikeout rate remains one of the best among starting pitchers. Despite being severely injured, Glasnow allowed only one run in the important game for the Rays, where he pitched 11 2/3 innings and recorded 15 strikeouts. This small sample size indicates that his work is still at an elite level.
In 2024, Glasnau will pay a whopping $25 million in salary. When the Rays signed him for a low sum in 2018, it was inevitable that if he reached the peak of his power, at some point the Rays wouldn’t be able to afford him. Opposing teams have kept Glasnau for at least two years on his current deal, so now might be the perfect time to make a move.
This is the perfect scenario for landing Glasnoe in St. Louis. Adam Wainwright will eventually retire in the next few seasons, and Miles Mikolas and Jack Flaherty will need top-tier aces to complement them on the biggest stages. We have a short time to wait because we are on our way.
