One of the Dallas Cowboys’ biggest weapons over the past few seasons has been their much-hyped offensive line.
This season, it was once again in the top end as one of the better units in the league…no surprise, except one rookie has gotten a lot faster.
Now let’s dig into the units that made it to the divisional rounds of the playoffs.
The season starting group consisting of Tyler Smith, Conor McGovern, Tyler Biadas, Zach Martin and Terrence Steele had a good enough year overall.
The biggest point is that the line is flexible throughout the year. Rookie Smith, veteran Tyrone Smith, Martin and McGovern each alternated in different positions and played well. … Especially Tyler Smith.
Steele had a breakout year and struggled in the running game until he injured his ACL against the Houston Texans.
Before Steele’s injury, the Cowboys’ running game was one of their best weapons. In his first 14 games, Dallas totaled 176, 163, 159, 169, 200 and 220 yards.
In addition, Dallas had nine straight games over 100 yards rushed by Steele playing. The injured Cowboys have hit that mark only three times in their last six games.
Penalties were also a big issue for the team as they piled them up. Rookie Smith scored 11 that year, but we can all agree he had a great campaign. In fact, analyst Brian Baldinger says Tyler was the NFL’s best rookie O-lineman.
Martin and McGovern combined just two penalties for the entire year, while center Biadas served five.
Veteran Jason Peters has also shown versatility as a backup this season. The former Eagles star has started two of his 11 games, and rookie Josh has also seen his ball on the field in varying stages.
So, do we need to add depth to our offensive line? Additionally, Peters has signed his one-year deal, which will make him 41 next season.
One good thing is that we can expect most lines to stick together in the near future. Steele, Smith, McGovern, Biadasz, and Ball are all under the age of 25. Martin is showing no signs of heading towards the end of his career. Tyrone Smith may have one more year left.
Also worth mentioning in this group are young people like Matt Farniok, Matt Waletzko, Aviante Collins and Alec Lindstrom.
In some NFL Mock Drafts, Dallas will take the Texas Longhorns back in the first round and take out Bijan Robinson.
All in all, a decent year for the unit, but the penalty issue continues to be an issue and it appears to have been fixed towards the end of the year, but I’m more confident that it will be fixed than Dallas will fix the penalty issue. There is hope. .
