Like many Americans across the country, the sports world is reeling over the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police after a traffic stop in Memphis.
Memphis Grizzles coach Taylor Jenkins called the loss of Nichols “devastating.” expressed the meaning of
“The NFL mourns the tragic and senseless death of Tyre Nichols and extends our deepest condolences to his loved ones and the Memphis community.” read the statement. “We remain committed to combating the injustices and injustices that plague our society and are committed to working with our social justice partners to support our communities and fight for change. We will continue to work together.”
On Friday, Memphis police released body camera footage and video from street cameras of the Jan. 7 police exchange that led to Nichols’ death. Five Memphis police officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, two counts of obstruction of justice related to Nichols’ death, and one count of obstruction of justice.

Whether the NFL will hold a moment of silence for Nichols before Sunday’s NFC title game between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers or during the AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals. is not clear.
