La Jolla Country Day School’s Breya Cunningham and Jada Williams will help represent the West as the McDonald’s All-Americans of women’s basketball.

The nation’s top 48 players (four 12-player teams representing the East and West men’s and women’s teams) will play in Houston on Tuesday, March 28th. The women’s game will air on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. PT, while the men’s game will air on ESPN at 6:00 p.m. PT.

“I’m so proud of our girls,” said Country Day girls coach Terry Bamford. “We played a big schedule. I went out and did a good job.

“Breya and Jada are great players and great leaders.”

Power forward Cunningham, 6-foot-4, is averaging 19-plus points and 10-plus rebounds per game for the Torys, ranked 6th in the nation. MaxPreps.com.

Point guard Williams is averaging 11 points, four rebounds and five assists per game.

Only eight girls from the San Diego area were named to McDonald’s All-American team. 5 of them from La Jolla Country Day. This year’s Cunningham and Williams, Candace Wiggins (2004), Kelsey Plum (2013) and Tehina. Paopao (2020).

“Country Day has a great tradition,” Bamford said. “We have a girl’s jersey hanging on the wall. When someone comes into our gym and looks up, it’s very impressive.”

More than 720 players were nominated by high school coaches, athletic directors, principals, or members of McDonald’s national selection committees. A selection committee narrowed the list down to the final 48.
