Los Angeles – Boogie Ellis scored a career-high 31 points to lead a second-half comeback in USC men’s basketball as the Trojans defeated rival No. 8 UCLA 77-64 at home Thursday night.

USC (15-6, 7-3 Pac-12) extended their home win streak against UCLA to five games, winning six of their last nine at the Galen Center. The Trojans have won 10 straight at home since losing to the Florida Gulf Coast in the season opener.

“It’s a classic USC/UCLA rivalry game, and it’s very physical,” said USC head coach Andy Enfield. β€œBoth teams played very hard. (UCLA) is a great team and very well coached. Coach[Mick]Cronin is doing a great job and the players are really hard to defend. Thing.”

Ellis scored 27 points in the second half and trailed by 12 points at halftime, the Trojans outscored the Bruins 52–27 in the final period. Ellis went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line with six assists and four rebounds.

Drew Peterson has 16 points and 6 rebounds. Kobe Johnson scored his ten on five boards and he five dimes.

Much like their first game at Westwood on January 5th, the Trojans fought back in the second half after posting a double-digit half-time deficit.

The Trojans had a 9-2 run early in the first half, but were soon scoreless for over seven minutes. The Bruins controlled the rest of the period, going into halftime with a 37-25 lead.

“Me and Drew have told them we’ve been in this position before,” Ellis said. We can’t, you know, we’re going to come out, we’re going to punch him in the mouth in the second half.Forget what happened in the first half.”

USC roared with a 25-3 run boosted by Ellis’ 10 points in the stretch that erased UCLA’s lead. The Trojans made him 6/9 from his 3-point line in the second half.

The Bruins cut the Trojan lead to two points with 3:11 left. After Peterson responded with a pull-up jumper, Ellis blocked Tiger Campbell’s step back and shot two free throws from Johnson. USC blocked his UCLA next possession and Ellis hit another of his 3-pointers at the 1:25 mark to effectively end the game.

USC made 14-of-14 perfect shots from the free-throw line against Arizona State on Saturday, and made all 16 foul shots in the second half.

Jaime Jacquez Jr. still leads the Pac-12 standings with a team-high 15 points at UCLA.
