Veteran other than Aaron Rodgers offers Jets options to end QB woes

The Jets are on the market for a quarterback…again. This is his second in a three-part series exploring options this offseason. This is what it looks like adding either Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo.

Jets fans have a vision in their heads of Aaron Rodgers dancing in Joe Namath’s old number 12, but there are still many hurdles to overcome before a trade for Rodgers gets any closer to reality. must be cleared.

The hiring of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett fueled speculation on Rodgers, but take a deep breath and remember that the Jets still have a long shot at acquiring the 39-year-old Rodgers from Green Bay. The Jets will have to wait for Rodgers and the Packers to decide what they want to do.

In the meantime, Jets decision makers will have to evaluate what else is available in the quarterback market, and there are two names that outperform others in terms of availability and ability. – Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo.

No need to play what if or if, then with these two. It’s been known for months that they’ll be available, and both could fit exactly what the Jets are looking for: the Jets’ defense ranks him fourth in the NFL, and their offense ranks with him. was 29th. The Jets have great young skill his players like Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore, and Breece Hall. The Jets need an above-average quarterback to manage the game.

I’ve done both before. Can they do it for the Jets in 2023? Let’s take a look at both players.

New car?

The first domino to fall in this offseason quarterback sweepstakes may be Kerr. The Raiders benched Kerr with two games left in the season and declared he was done with Kerr when they asked him to leave the team altogether.

This sets the off-season when the car will be traded or released from Las Vegas.

The key date is February 15th. That’s the day Kerr’s 2023 base salary of $32.9 million and his 2024 base salary of $7.5 million are guaranteed. Technically, the Raiders can’t trade Kerr until the new league year in March, but he can always agree to trade with the team. The Rams and Lions signed Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff, while the Chiefs and Washington traded Alex Smith.

The hard part about trading Kerr is that the money is guaranteed on February 15th. The Jets agreed to trade Kerr this weekend and could change his mind on March 1 if they think they can get Rodgers. The Raiders will be stuck with Kerr unless they can get another deal.

As such, many expect Kerr to be released instead. If the Raiders cut him before his February 15th, they owe him nothing. In that case, Kerr is free to sign anywhere immediately. He won’t have to wait until March 15, when the new league year begins, like the current free agent does.

Carr turns 32 in March. He’s durable, making 15 appearances each season. He is his three-time Pro Bowler and has had many good seasons. He makes a lot of sense for the Jets. The trade shouldn’t be overly costly, perhaps a second-day draft pick to get him, and he’s under contract for another three years.

Kerr has a no-trade clause and you might want to avoid the Jets. Some believe he doesn’t handle the New York spotlight well. He’s a player who spent his entire college and professional career on the West Coast.

If the Jets didn’t make the trade and redo his current contract, his salary cap number would jump from $34.9 million in 2023 to $43.9 million in 2024, which could be considered too high.

Under Josh McDaniels in 2022, Kerr threw for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games. His completion rate has dropped from his 68.4 in 2021 to his 60.8 in 2022.

Jimmy Sing

For months, Garoppolo felt like the quarterback the Jets were most likely to add, and the 31-year-old is close with coach Robert Saleh. The two were together in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020. Surrey likes Garoppolo in 2019 when he quarterbacked the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

With the dismissal of Mike Ruffler, Garoppolo felt inevitable, but Hackett is running a system similar to the one Garoppolo had with the 49ers.

Garoppolo’s biggest drawback is durability. It is his only two appearances in his 15 games in his career. His 2022 season ended with a leg injury after 11 games.

The 49ers are expected to walk Garoppolo in free agency, with Trey Lance and now Brock Purdy at quarterback.

Injuries have complicated Garoppolo’s worth, but he should still command a second-tier quarterback deal worth $30-$35 million per season, possibly $140 million over four years. That’s a lot cheaper than Rogers and gives the Jets more flexibility to spend elsewhere.

The free agency negotiation window will begin on March 13, with a formal contract signing on March 15. He should be one of the first quarterbacks to leave the board…probably to the Jets.

Coming up next: Zach Wilson and the rest.
