City of Iowa, Iowa (KCRG) – Earlier this week, the Iowa City Council voted on the first of two considerations to change its ordinance.
The ordinance came into force in 2007 after a local bar hosted an amateur boxing match.
The change to this ordinance is due to amateur boxing competitions requiring events to be held at the Graduate Hotel. TV-9 heard from an experienced amateur boxer about his reaction.
Daddy Mansari has been training for a chance to box on the ‘big stage’ from 2021. He was thrilled to learn that the Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament could be in Iowa City this year.
“It’s a moment I’ve been training for a while and I’m looking forward to it,” Mansary said. “This sport helped me during the worst times of my life, when I was injured. I was looking for something else.”
Upon learning of this, his coach went to the Iowa City Council to ask for an ordinance to be changed banning this type of event at establishments with a liquor license. He discovers that the Graduate Hotel will host the event.
The Board unanimously decided to support it. They agreed on the first of his two votes to change the ordinance and allow sanctioned amateur boxing events.
“It’s a great situation to be able to bring in something where you can actually see people who have put in so much time and discipline and training. entertainment,” said Mayor Pro Tem Megan Alter.
Now, boxers like Mansari are one step closer to having the opportunity to compete at a greater level.
“Being part of that community keeps me wanting more and hungry.
This ordinance change will officially take effect after a second review and final vote.
The Golden Globe Contest will be held at the Graduate Hotel this April.
