Men’s Basketball Notes: Brayson Laube breaks Marion’s long-standing career points record

Marion – Marion High School’s top scorer in men’s basketball history. Think for a moment about all the history associated with it.

Brayson Laube has more career points than Casey Semler, Amrie Shelby and Todd Twachtman. A week ago he surpassed Hugh Leffingwell.

“These records are really tough,” said Laube. “I knew about him and his family when I was younger, so I really looked up to Casey Semler. I was in, so I think I kept scoring.”

If you don’t know Leffingwell’s tragic story, he was on the University of Iowa’s freshman team in the 1952–53 season, playing Carl Kane, Bill Logan, and Bill Logan, who later became known as the Fabulous Five. I played with Seaburg. , Sharm Schuurmann, Bill Schuch. Leffingwell was diagnosed with leukemia and died shortly after that season.

“I know a little bit about him, I’ve heard a little bit about him,” Laube said. “He was a great, great man and a great basketball player.”

And Laube, at least, is a great kid and basketball player as well. He’s averaging 22 points per game for his fourth-placed Wolves (13-3) in Class 3A this season, winning seven straight and 11 of 12 wins.

Marion will be performing Friday night in West Delaware. Laube scored his 1,388 career points in that game.

His game has changed, but he’s been playing since first grade. In the ninth grade he was almost strictly a three-point shooter for him, but he became stronger, faster, dribbling and driving and mid-range.

Laube is second on Marion’s team in rebounds, assists and steals. He was a top-team All-Star last season and Class 3A State where he scored 35 points in overtime for the Wolves, who lost to Winterset in the tournament quarterfinals.

“I knew I had to keep improving as a player,” he said. “I knew I needed to be stronger to help my game, help my team, go to college, and graduate with my goals. I’m working out, and I want to use my physique to get stronger.”

Laube plays college ball in Augustana (SD)’s prestigious Division II program. His sisters Mia (St. Thomas, MN) and Kaiba (Northern Iowa) both played in college or are still playing in college.

His parents, Ami and Corby, also performed. Let’s just say that hoops are a big deal for this family.

“Basketball brings our family together on another level,” Brayson said. “I don’t think there’s a family that bonds more through sports than ours. We’re really competitive and we talk a lot of crap, but we all love games. That’s us. It just ties in. It’s hard to explain.”

– Makoketa Valley senior guard Avery Holtz surpassed 1,000 points in his career on Tuesday in a 72-32 win over Springville. Holz scored 23 points in this game. His record in the Makoketa Valley is 12-5, with four wins in a row and seven wins in his last eight games.

– There are now 12 undefeated teams remaining in the state. They are Class 1A North Lynn, Grandview Christian, Dunkerton, WACO, Central Lyon, OABCIG, Lake Mills, Sault Central, 2A West Burlington, 3A Bondurant Farrar, 4A Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Sioux City East. .

– Estherville-Lincoln Central junior guard Owen Larson is the state’s leading scorer with 30.9 points per game. Jesup’s Jack Miller leads the area in points (24.7). Laube leads Metro.
