Report: Red Sox ‘in talks’ with free agent catcher Roberto Perez, originally on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Red Sox appear to be hiring a catcher due to the Commission’s approach going into the 2023 MLB season, a questionable move to say the least.
Christian Vazquez was the Red Sox’s lead catcher for more than five years before being traded to the Houston Astros last season. Instead of returning Vazquez as a free agent this offseason (he eventually signed with the Minnesota Twins), the Red Sox now consist of Reese McGuire, Connor Wong and Jorge Alfaro. There is a trio of catchers.

Roberto Perez might also be in that group.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported Thursday that the Red Sox are “in talks” with a free-agent catcher.
Perez has not been a great offensive player during his major league career. 233 batting average with 8 RBIs.
But he is very good defensively. Perez won the American League Gold Glove Award for Catcher in both 2019 and 2020 with the Cleveland Guardians. He also placed him 33rd among all active players in defensive WAR, winning from 8.1 seasons to 9 seasons.
But neither Perez nor the three catchers already on Boston’s roster are as talented as Vazquez. A sensible approach would have been to bring him back this winter. I have.
