With the USF women’s and men’s basketball schedules packed with conferences, each matchup either makes or breaks a chance to make it to the postseason.
Here’s how both programs ended their matchup on the go on Wednesday.
Women’s Basketball – USF 89, Tulsa 68
Senior forward Darcy Fankam Menjiadeu continued his conference success with 25 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high four assists against Tulsa as he led USF to an 89-68 win.
Mendjiadeu’s performance put the Bulls (19-4, 8-0 AAC) in dominance over the Golden Hurricanes (15-5, 5-2 AAC). USF trailed him by three points in the first quarter, but a speedy offensive production and a beefed up defense gave him a 41-31 lead at the end of the first half.
In support of the forwards, senior guard Jelena Zineke scored 21 points. She shot her 50% from the field and free throws from her line she was 3-for-3.
The Bulls struggled at the 3-point line throughout the game, shooting only 33%. Junior guard Sammy Poissis unleashed a brooding three of eight from across the arc. Neither team showed the ability to score threes, with Golden his Hurricanes shooting only 32% of his.
However, the Bulls’ shot had no effect on the internal scoring. They scored 56 points and 46 rebounds in the paint in the game. The Bulls dominated the Golden Hurricanes 46-26 on rebounds while maintaining a 20-point lead for most of the second half.
Women’s basketball continues its winning streak in the American conference, maintaining an eight-game winning streak and undefeated streak. The win is also the Bulls’ 11th straight win over Tulsa since 2015.
South Florida continues its road trip to Tennessee, where the show will face Memphis on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The match he will air on ESPN+ and Bulls Unlimited.
Men’s Basketball – USF 76, Temple 79
Despite their best efforts, USF Men’s Basketball fell short of Temple 79-76 due to free throw and turnover issues.
The Bulls (9-12, 2-6 AAC) lost a close game to the Owls (13-9, 7-2 AAC) despite having many chances to lead. The game remained close through both halves, but the Owls barely held out in overtime after several crunch-time USF turnovers.
Both USF and Temple started strong early, with each having a fast-paced offense in the first five minutes of the game. Both sides began to slow down with frequent scoring droughts. The Bulls had his 43.3% shooting percentage from the field and the Owls had him 42.9%. Both teams struggled and the first half ended in a 34-34 draw.
Keyshawn Bryant, in his fifth year, led the Bulls with 21 points on 67 percent shooting from the field. His junior center Russel Cheva and his sophomore guard Selton Miguel each also scored his 15th.
Steals and fast-breaking buckets were prominent on both sides, leading to many turnover-driven scoring runs. The Owls finished with 17 turnovers and the Bulls with 16.
Temple managed to take a 10-point lead with nine minutes left in the second half, but two scoring runs from the Bulls and a game-tying bucket by Chewa allowed USF to tie the game 70–70 at the end of regulation.
After a turnover from Chewa on offense, the Owls hit two late-game free throws to extend the score from 77 to 79, past the Bulls’ 76 points.
Aside from turnovers, one of the biggest contributors to Wednesday’s loss was a low free-throw shooting percentage. He was only shooting 38% for the Bulls. Had USF been able to hit a free-throw shot from his line early on, it could have put the Bulls in a better position at the end of the second half.
Men’s basketball will take on the SMU Mustangs on Sunday at 4pm. The match will be broadcast on his ESPN+.
