After being born into a poor family and having his sporting dreams dashed, the playmaker who fought for success will premiere his one-man show in Burnley.

Inspired by author and performer Oliver Sykes’ own experience growing up without a mother and being coached as an amateur boxer by his father, Alfie’s First Fight, a one-man show, is a story about love, loss, family and boxing.

Thirty-three-year-old Oliver was born into poverty in rural Derbyshire. He and his five siblings grew up in municipal housing in Breadline while receiving clothing donations, income support, and free school meals from local charities.

His sports dreams were shattered along with his hand after being attacked by teens in a park. after being awarded a scholarship) and is now a writer and performer of his first children’s work.

“Alfie’s first fight is the kind of story you don’t often see on stage,” said Oliver.

“This is a relatable, working-class story about a loving, supportive, non-traditional family who loves boxing.

“Alfie’s First Fight is a story about growing up, fighting your fears, and becoming who you want to be.

“It will appeal to everyone who has felt like an underdog at times, but gave everything they had to win.”

Oliver graduated first class from Lancaster University. He then took part in a paid internship at Contact His Theater in Manchester, and through a scholarship program for outstanding art graduates from low-income families, he became a producer of theatrical and creative projects.

Strongly influenced by Oliver’s upbringing and childhood obstacles, Alfie’s First Fight tells the story of shy 12-year-old Alfie.

When Alfie’s older brother Jacob goes missing before the Golden Gloves Championship (the biggest boxing match of his life), he puts his fears aside and heads to investigate.

On the surface, it’s a simple adventure story about the good guys, the bad guys, and the drama of the boxing ring. But Oliver also talks about Alfie’s first fight being about love, loss, family, and learning how to fight for what you want.

Oliver Sykes’ first touring children’s theater show, Alfie’s First Fight, opens at the Burnley Youth Theater on Saturday 11th February and opens in theaters, libraries, schools and boxing venues across the UK from February. It will be performed at a club.
