More than 48 hours later, the same problems that plagued Kansas against TCU on Saturday were rampant against Baylor in Waco on Monday night as the Jayhawks lost 75-69.
Kansas started the game with a turnover by LJ Cryer that quickly converted into a layup. Flo Thamba’s and his one gave Baylor his 5-0 lead and it didn’t get much better for Kansas. Gradey Dick hit his 3 but picked up two early fouls and sat for a long time in the half. And the Bears answered with shot after shot.
Jalen Wilson’s layup made it 11–7 before a three-plus-minute scoring drought by Kansas led to a 9–0 Baylor run. Kansas turned the ball in his 6th in his first 10 minutes, but Baylor returned his 4th of his 9th inning from his 3rd. LJ Cryer scored 19 of Baylor’s first 38 points in the first 16 minutes. Dick and Wilson hit threes to cut the lead to single digits, with Cryer answering with his own threes every time. He was 5-7 for 3 in that run.
Kansas got better off offense with Wilson’s hit shots and McCullough getting to the line, but Baylor continued to play every time KU cut the lead into single digits, but Wilson jumper, Baylor’s Missed a free throw and missed two KJ Adams free throws in 6.4 seconds. He was 41-34 in the first half. Wilson had 14 points in the first half and Dick and McCuller scored eight of his.
Kansas’ offense went into the paint for an easy basket and came out of half strength. However, the Jayhawks continued to struggle to keep Baylor off the offensive glass before Wilson passed to McCullough for a foul and his two free throws, and Dick pumped a large amount of his fake. After that, he drove hard into the basket and scored his one. And just four minutes into the second half, Kansas were just two down after starting the half on a 9-4 run, and Baylor returned it with a turnover.
Great ball movement ensued and McCuller found Wilson for a 3 to take his first lead of the game at 46–45. Kansas and Baylor traded body blows, but a series of questionable calls against Kansas gave Baylor a 6-point lead. Baylor couldn’t stop hitting threes, and Kansas’ one-point lead turned into his eight-point deficit in his third minute. Dick ended the run with another drive to score his 16th points of the game and hit a jumper on his 18th on the next possession. However, Adam Flagler’s and-one extended Baylor’s lead to nine midway through the second half.
Bill Self went technical for the second straight game as the foul disparity widened with Baylor’s lead. His 1-12 stretch from KU put this out of reach. With back-to-back baskets, Kansas was back on his 9th down, and Wilson’s drive cut him 68-61 with 3:30 remaining.
McCuller came up with a big block, was fouled, and headed to the 1-1 line, making it a 5-point game as part of a 10-2 run. However, Kansas failed to grab the rebound and Baylor hit a free throw to tie the ice.
Kansas will head to Lexington on Saturday to face Kentucky.
