The market is heating up as the 2023 NBA trade deadline looms. The Philadelphia 76ers haven’t really been linked to a potential deal lately, but defensive standout Mattis Thybulle was recently mentioned as a possible target for Westerners who could be a target for the conference team.
According to NBA Reporter Marc Stein, Thybulle is on the Sacramento Kings’ radar. With Sacramento suddenly looking like a playoff contender in his Western conference, they became buyers as the trade hit his deadline.
Here’s an update on plans that may target defensive standouts:
“Sacramento is said to be watching Philadelphia’s Mattis Thybulle for availability as a Kings. Around. Meanwhile, a source with knowledge of the Kings’ thinking says Sacramento is trading Rishawn Holmes. If they can’t (as we said here last week), rival teams hoping for Rishawn Holmes to be a buyout candidate will be disappointed. With nearly $10,000 left, the buyout will be complicated for both sides.”
Going into the 2022-2023 NBA season, Thybulle was entering the final year of his current contract with the Sixers. There were reports that Thybulle representatives briefly discussed a possible extension before the deadline, but no agreement was reached.
Thybulle is therefore slated to become a restricted free agent in the summer.
It’s unclear if the Sixers see Thyble’s future in Philadelphia. Though he was once considered nearly unbeatable in past trade negotiations, Thybulle has struggled to establish a consistent role in the Sixers’ rotation.
Thybulle has appeared in 44 games this season. He is averaging 12 minutes on the floor, a career low for a winger in his fourth season. Thybulle’s defense remains valuable, but his offensive growth hasn’t consistently shown.
Averaging 3 points per game, Thybulle knocked down 43% of his shots and 32% of his threes. This is on par with his average shooting percentage in the first three years of his career.
It’s possible Thybulle will move out before the deadline, but it doesn’t look like the Sixers, and the Kings are currently discussing a potential deal.
