The New York Yankees finally showed some life in the World Series, but the looming storyline about Juan Soto's free agency grows stronger each day.

The sweepstakes for Soto will be loud and active, and the Yankees are going to be right in the middle of it.

While a decade ago, there would be no question as to who the highest bidder for a player like Soto would be, the Yankees of today aren't unanimously expected to write a blank check.

There's a very real possibility that the Yankees get outbid by the New York Mets or Los Angeles Dodgers.

If that happens, Jon Heyman of The New York Post detailed what that contingency plan might look like.

"Should the Yankees be unable to make good on their top priority and re-sign superstar free agent Juan Soto, one backup plan involves Mets slugging star Pete Alonso plus pitching stars, perhaps former Cy Young winners Corbin Burnes or Blake Snell," Heyman wrote.

Failing to re-sign Soto would leave an unimaginable burn on the Yankees fanbase considering what he's done for the franchise in his single season wearing pinstripes.

However, this postseason has shown that the Yankees still have major holes across the diamond, including the infield corners and in left field.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the offseason arrives, especially if Soto does land somewhere other than The Bronx..
